Description

Second cataloged reverse pre-cud for the 1934-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, PC-1c-1934D-02R documents a Denver Mint die that developed a rim-area crack isolating a fragment of the reverse die face without that fragment separating. The 1934-D cent was produced during the early years of the Great Depression recovery, when Denver Mint production volumes were climbing back from the dramatic lows of 1931-1933 — a period that had seen some of the lowest cent mintages in Lincoln series history. Pre-cuds form when accumulated striking stress concentrates along a line from the rim inward, creating a fracture boundary that traces the future shape of a potential full cud. If the die remained in service beyond this point, coins with a complete cud (raised blank area where the fragment displaced) would have followed in the production sequence.
