1931-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Carrying spread toward the center on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, and the Y of LIBERTY, this 1931 San Francisco Mint Mercury Dime WDDO-003 was attributed by the Wexler Team. Adolph A. Weinman's iconic Winged Liberty Head design — commonly called the Mercury Dime for its resemblance to the Roman god — ran from 1916 through 1945, and the 1931-S date carries a mintage of 1,800,000, placing it among the better dates in the series. Die markers include a die gouge between the lower I and T in UNITED and a die gouge in the lower M in AMERICA on the reverse, providing reliable attribution points on the opposite side of the coin. The center-directed spread produces subtly thickened design elements where the secondary hub impression sits close to the primary, requiring careful examination to distinguish from normal striking characteristics.
