1931-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Among Mercury dime doubled die obverses, the 1931-S WDDO-001 is the most significant attributed variety for this San Francisco issue, cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II and Cherrypickers FS-10-1931S-101 (Wexler Variety ID: 1931-S 10¢ WDDO-001). Class II center-spread doubling affects the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, Adolph Weinman's designer's initials, and the Y of LIBERTY. The obverse die marker suite is detailed: a die gouge to the left of the Y in LIBERTY, plus numerous southwest-to-northeast die scratches left of the upper profile and right of the lower back of the head. The reverse carries a die scratch south-southwest from the bottom left of the M in UNUM, a die gouge north of the second U in PLURIBUS, and a die gouge south of the N in UNUM. The 1931-S Mercury dime is a semi-key in Weinman's 90% silver series, making WDDO-001 desirable to both date set collectors and variety specialists. The FS and CONECA cross-references ensure recognition across all major registry and attribution platforms, cementing this as one of the best-documented Mercury dime doubled die obverses in the Cherrypickers' system. Reverse: A die scratch runs SSW from the bottom left of the M in UNUM.Submitted By: Thomas McGowanCross References: None known Obverse: Numerous SW/NE die scratches can be found to the left of the upper profile and to the right of the lower back of the head.
