1929-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

The 1929-S Buffalo Nickel RPM-003 is an S/S East repunched mintmark variety cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-095 and DMR-005. The mintmark was punched once and then repunched to the east, leaving the earlier impression visible to the northwest of the final position. Three die stages are recognized: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C (LDS), all requiring additional specimen photography to complete die-state confirmation. The San Francisco Mint produced Buffalo Nickels throughout most of the series run, and the S-mint coins of 1929 were struck during the final years before production ebbed with the Great Depression. James Earle Fraser's design, featuring his composite Native American portrait and the Black Diamond bison, remained in production through 1938. Additional high-magnification color photographs of known specimens are needed to support all three stage attributions for this RPM.
