1927-D VAM-1C
Error
Description
Discovered in 2015 by Lance Newman through the Online Coin Club (OCC) community, the 1927-D VAM-1C "Die Break R" Peace dollar documents a significant obverse die failure on Anthony de Francisci's design. Cataloged as 1C II 1 · B2a (Die Break R) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-5 (approximately 30-75 known), this variety features a radial die crack extending from the rim to the top of Liberty's head at the left side of the letter R in LIBERTY, accompanied by a displaced field break — indicating the die steel along the crack path has shifted enough to create a visible step or ridge on struck coins where the field level changes across the fracture line. Denver produced approximately 1.27 million Peace dollars in 1927, one of the lowest mintages in the entire Peace dollar series and a date that commands strong premiums in all grades. The scarce mintage means fewer working die pairs were required, yet the demanding striking pressures needed to fully bring up de Francisci's high-relief design still generated the die stress that leads to rim-to-design fractures. The die crack's specific path — from the rim to the top of Liberty's head at the left side of R in LIBERTY — places the fracture in a prominent area where the relief transition between the rim, the letter R, and Liberty's crown creates concentrated stress zones in the die steel. The displaced field break notation elevates this beyond a simple hairline crack, indicating the die has begun to separate along the fracture with enough displacement to create a visible ridge on struck coins. At R-5 rarity with only 30-75 estimated known examples, this variety is genuinely scarce and commands dedicated searching among the already limited population of 1927-D Peace dollars. Collectors should examine the area from the rim through the left side of R in LIBERTY under 10-15x magnification for the raised crack line and associated field displacement.
