1926 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1926 10-cent WDDO-006, this Mercury Dime variety exhibits a clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 8 o'clock, visible on the ERTY of LIBERTY. This Class V pivoted hub doubling placed the rotation center in the lower-left quadrant, causing elements in the upper-right area — where LIBERTY sits on Adolph Weinman's obverse — to receive the greatest angular offset. The selective involvement of only ERTY rather than the full word indicates the displacement's detectable zone began partway through the inscription, with LIB receiving insufficient offset to cross the visibility threshold. This partial-word manifestation maps the pivot geometry: letters closest to the 8 o'clock axis show minimal displacement, while those farthest away register the clockwise rotation most clearly. No significant die markers were noted, and no cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 1926 Mercury Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams. Examination under 7x to 10x magnification should focus on the ERTY letters, looking for directional displacement where the secondary image appears rotated slightly clockwise.
