1926 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Submitted by Thomas McGowan and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1926 10-cent WDDO-003, this Mercury Dime doubled die obverse displays a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 8 o'clock, visible on the letters ERTY of LIBERTY. The Mercury Dime, actually depicting a Winged Liberty Head designed by Adolph A. Weinman, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 2.50 grams and 17.9 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. Die markers on the obverse include a nearly horizontal die scratch to the left of the T in LIBERTY and a small die gouge appearing as a dot above the 9 in the date, both useful for attributing the specific die pair. No significant reverse markers are noted initially, but in later die states a die crack runs from the bonnet to the rim between the R and T in LIBERTY, while the reverse remains unremarkable. The pivoted clockwise spread concentrated on the ERTY letters reflects a common doubling pattern where the hub shifted around a fixed point during the hubbing process.
