Description

WDDO-001 is the first documented doubled die obverse for the 1925 Lincoln Wheat Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team and catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1925 1¢ WDDO-001. The primary diagnostic is an extra eyelid visible to the southeast of the main eyelid — a hub doubling event that displaced the eyelid impression in a southeasterly direction, creating a second eyelid line above the main element. This should not be confused with mechanical doubling: the 1 and 9 of the date show mechanical doubling, a shelf-like artifact from die bounce that is distinct from the true hub doubling present on the eyelid. Die markers confirm attribution: a die scratch is present in the lower B of LIBERTY; a die scratch extends south-southwest from the lower right 5 of the date; and on the reverse, short die scratches extend southwest from the upper C of CENT. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 1925 1¢ WDDO-001.
