1924-S VAM-1R

Description

Discovered in 2019 by jrfaust, the 1924-S VAM-1R Peace Dollar is designated "Double Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder" and classified as II 1 - B2a with a rarity rating of I-2 R-5, indicating an estimated population of thirty-one to seventy-five known specimens. The obverse displays heavy double die clashes with a widely spaced long vertical spike at the eagle's right shoulder near the neck and a shorter vertical spike near the shoulder's edge. These clash spikes differ from the double spikes found on VAM-1B, establishing VAM-1R as a distinct die state. Peace Dollars are struck in 90% silver, and the high-relief-inspired design by Anthony de Francisci features an eagle perched on a rock where die clash evidence often concentrates along the shoulder and wing areas. The R-5 rarity level places this variety in a collecting tier where examples surface infrequently but are not prohibitively rare. Double clash spikes result from the obverse and reverse dies striking each other without a planchet multiple times, producing raised linear artifacts where opposing design elements repeatedly intersect.
