Description

Cataloged as 1B II 1 · B2a with ratings of I-2 R-4, this 1924-S Peace Dollar carries the designation "Double Clash Spikes Eagle's Shoulder" and was discovered by John Ginder in July 2005. The reverse exhibits heavy die clash marks featuring widely spaced double long vertical spikes rising from the eagle's right shoulder. Double clash marks indicate the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them on at least two separate occasions, with the second clash event producing a set of transferred design elements offset from the first — creating the "double" pattern of widely spaced vertical spikes. These raised spikes on the eagle's shoulder represent mirror-image impressions of obverse design features transferred during the clash events, compressed into the pointed forms characteristic of high-relief clash transfers. Die class II 1 designates a normal obverse in first subclass, paired with reverse B2a. San Francisco Mint, 90% silver at 26.73 grams. At R-4 rarity — estimated 100 to 300 specimens known — this variety is classified as "Scarce" within the Van Allen-Mallis framework, making it one of the more obtainable VAM varieties for the 1924-S date.
