Description

Originally discovered in 2009 as VAM-1F and redesignated VAM-1C2 in 2012, this Peace Dollar variety from the 1924 San Francisco Mint is cataloged as 1C2 II1 - B2a (Collar Clash) with rarity ratings of I-2 R-5. Collar clashes are an uncommon die error that occurs when the die strikes against the inside edge of the collar — the circular retaining ring that forms the coin's edge — transferring indentations onto the die face. The reverse die, classified B2a, shows indentations on the rim above UNITED STATES where the die clashed against the collar's inner surface, and notably, the spacing of these indentations matches the edge reeding spacing of the finished coin. This reeding-pattern transfer provides definitive evidence that the collar was the source of contact rather than another die or foreign object. On the obverse, a short die scratch appears at the top left of the T in LIBERTY, serving as a die marker for confirming the specific die pair. An R-5 rarity rating estimates 31 to 100 surviving specimens. Collectors should examine the rim above UNITED STATES for the evenly spaced indentations that mirror the coin's reeded edge pattern.
