Description

Most recently discovered of the 1924-S Peace Dollar varieties in this batch, the VAM-1Q was identified in 2019 by jrfaust and features a shallow die gouge at the top of the first short ray right of B in LIBERTY. Rated I-2 for interest and R-5 for rarity (an estimated 1,001 to 3,000 surviving), this variety's diagnostic sits in a highly specific location — the first short ray right of B, where the gouge appears at the tip as a shallow raised mark. The precision of this positional description reflects the maturation of the VAM community, where modern discoverers provide exact ray-by-ray locations to prevent confusion with nearby varieties. Die gouges form when a sharp instrument contacts the die surface, creating an incuse mark that fills with metal during striking. The shallow depth means it may be less visible on weakly struck or worn specimens, making higher-grade examples more desirable. Struck at San Francisco in 90% silver at 38.1mm. De Francisci's obverse features radiant rays extending from Liberty's crown, with LIBERTY spelled across the rays. Locate the first short ray right of B in LIBERTY and inspect its top for the shallow raised gouge.
