1924-S VAM-1O

Description

Discovered in 2019 by Raybob15239, the 1924-S Peace Dollar VAM-1O is identified by a beveled field at the top of Liberty's radiant crown (designated B2a, Beveled Cap Top) below the letter R, created by die polishing that removed metal from the die surface and left polishing lines near R. The beveled area indicates Mint workers polished the obverse die in the vicinity of Liberty's crown — the radiant headpiece that Anthony de Francisci modeled on his wife Mary — smoothing the field enough to alter the normal contour between the crown and R in LIBERTY. Classified as die pair II1-B2a with an interest rating of I-2 and a rarity of R-5 (estimated 31 to 75 specimens known), this variety rewards collectors who examine the field just below R for the subtle flattening and residual polishing lines that distinguish it from a normal strike. The 1924-S was produced at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of 1,728,000 — among the lower production figures in the Peace Dollar series, making any attributable variety from this date particularly appealing. Struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams and 38.1mm diameter. Examine the obverse field at Liberty's crown top below R for the beveled contour and fine polishing lines.
