Description

Documented in 2012, the 1924-P VAM-1BH records a Peace Dollar obverse die exhibiting a radial die crack from the rim at the left side of T in LIBERTY, with slight field displacement near the rim. Classified as II1 with reverse die B2a, rated I-2 and R-6 (13 to 30 known), this variety captures an early-stage rim break — the crack has propagated inward to T, and the field displacement indicates die metal has begun to shift at the fracture origin. Radial cracks from the rim are the most common form of die failure, as the rim endures the highest stress during each striking cycle: confined metal flow at the coin's edge concentrates forces that eventually exceed the die steel's fatigue limit. The slight displacement distinguishes this from a simple hairline crack, as actual metal movement indicates the fracture has begun to widen. De Francisci's Peace Dollar was in its third year of normal-relief production in 1924, struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm at Philadelphia.
