1924 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
First and currently only documented doubled die reverse for the 1924 Peace Dollar, WDDR-001 represents a hub doubling variety on one of the most beloved silver dollar designs in American numismatics. The Peace Dollar, designed by Anthony de Francisci and first struck in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I, features a high-relief portrait of Liberty on the obverse and a perched bald eagle on the reverse with the word PEACE inscribed on the rock below. Doubled die reverses on Peace Dollars are considerably scarcer than on Lincoln Cents, owing to the much smaller number of die pairs used in silver dollar production. The 1924 Philadelphia issue had a mintage of approximately 11.8 million pieces, substantial for the series but modest compared to the hundreds of millions of cents struck annually. Hub-to-die misalignment during the multiple passes required to sink the Peace Dollar design into each working die created the doubled features preserved in this variety. With no additional cross-references currently known beyond Wexler Variety ID: 1924 $1 WDDR-001, this may represent a recently documented discovery or a variety that has not yet been cataloged by other attribution services. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this DDR on a classic silver dollar design occupies a different tier of collecting interest than the more commonly encountered cent and nickel doubled dies.
