Description

First cataloged in 2012 and revised in 2017 by Tom Petrosie, the 1924-P VAM-1BG is a die break and collar clash variety on the Philadelphia Peace Dollar designed by Anthony de Francisci. Cataloged as II1 - B2a and titled "Die Break ON, Collar Clash 2-5 O'clock," this variety carries an Interest rating of I-2 and a Rarity rating of R-6, indicating an estimated 13 to 30 known examples. The reverse exhibits two distinct anomalies. First, a radial die crack extends from the rim below the O of ONE, continuing over to the N with a displaced field break — a progressive die failure where metal was pushed outward by the widening crack, creating a raised irregular ridge. Second, collar clash reeding indentations appear on the rim from the 2 to 5 o'clock positions, where the collar's reeded inner surface contacted the die or rim at an improper angle, transferring a ribbed pattern. The combination of a significant die break with collar clash evidence makes VAM-1BG a dual-feature variety of particular interest to specialists. The R-6 rarity ensures confirmed examples command attention when they appear.
