1924-P VAM-1AZ

Description

Discovered by Jason Henrichsen in 2010, the 1924-P VAM-1AZ records a radial die crack extending from the rim to above AR in DOLLAR on the reverse, with a displaced field above the R where the crack opened under striking pressure to push metal upward. Classified as I-2 R-6, the R-6 rarity places this at only 13 to 30 estimated survivors. The radial crack follows the most common fracture path: originating at the rim where stress concentrates at the thinnest die section, then propagating inward toward design elements. The displaced field above R distinguishes this from a simple hairline crack — the gap between fracture surfaces was wide enough to allow metal to flow into the opening, creating a raised plateau adjacent to the crack line. Die break varieties with displaced fields represent a more advanced stage of failure and are correspondingly scarcer because the die's remaining service life is short once displacement begins. De Francisci's Peace Dollar was in its fourth year, struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver at 38.1mm and 26.73 grams. Locate the radial crack from the rim to above AR in DOLLAR and the raised displaced field above R.
