A recent discovery documented in March 2024, the 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1AX2 features pitting on the obverse die (II1) — raised dots and surface irregularities caused by rust or corrosion on the die face that transferred to struck coins during production. Paired with reverse die B2a and carrying an I-2 interest level with R-5 rarity, this variety is distinguished from similar pitted-die varieties of the same date by its die marker: a vertical die scratch above the numeral 2 in the date, which differs from the die scratch on VAM-1CG but matches the one found on VAM-BM, confirming the obverse die identity. The "2" suffix in VAM-1AX2 indicates this is a recognized sub-variety or later designation that refined the original VAM-1AX classification. Die pitting from rust occurs when moisture contacts the die surface during storage, creating small corrosion pits that produce raised bumps on every coin struck thereafter. The 2024 discovery date makes VAM-1AX2 one of the most recently cataloged Peace Dollar varieties, demonstrating that new VAM designations continue to emerge a century after these coins were originally produced.
