Description

A constellation of die gouges clustered around the S in TRVST defines this 1924 Philadelphia Mint Peace Dollar variety, discovered in February 2007 by John Vernieri. The obverse die carries narrow, short vertical die gouges positioned at the left of the bottom of S in TRVST, with one gouge passing through the lower left of S, another above S, and a third to the right of S — creating a distinctive pattern of incised marks surrounding the letter. VAM plate notation 1AJ II1 - B2a classifies the variety with importance I-2 (moderately important) and rarity R-5 (scarce). Die gouges are created when a hard object scratches or digs into the die surface during handling or maintenance, and the concentration of multiple gouges around a single letter suggests the damage occurred during a specific incident rather than through gradual wear. John Vernieri is a recognized Peace Dollar researcher whose discoveries have expanded the VAM catalog for multiple dates.
