Description

Discovered in January 2007 by BJV, the 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1AI is characterized by narrow, short, and shallow vertical die gouges positioned below the V, between the V and S, and below TRVST on the obverse (die II1, reverse B2a). With an I-2 interest level and R-5 rarity, this variety documents a cluster of minor die imperfections concentrated in the inscription area of Anthony de Francisci's obverse design — the Latin motto IN GOD WE TRVST that distinguishes Peace Dollars from nearly all other American coin designs with its classical V replacing the letter U. The vertical orientation and shallow depth of the gouges suggest they may have resulted from feed finger contact or handling during die preparation rather than from a single impact event. Multiple gouges distributed across a localized area — below V, between VS, and below TRVST — create a pattern of small raised marks on struck coins that collectively serve as the attribution diagnostic. The 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar was produced in large quantities, and the shallow nature of these gouges requires careful magnified examination for positive identification.
