Description

Featuring a dramatically pitted and polished obverse, this 1924-P Peace Dollar VAM-1AH1 was discovered by John Vernieri in January 2007. Classified as 1AH1 (revised) I1 - B2a, the variety displays raised dots and splotches across the entire obverse die face — telltale evidence of a rusted and worn die whose surface had deteriorated before or during use. The rust pitting created small cavities in the die, which transferred as raised bumps onto struck coins, while vertical polishing lines around the date and Liberty head profile reveal the Mint's attempt to rehabilitate the die surface through mechanical polishing. This dual-nature surface — pitted from corrosion yet polished to extend service life — captures a moment in the die's working history where deterioration and remediation coexisted. The variety rates I-4 for interest, reflecting the visually striking surface texture, and R-6 for rarity, placing the known population at an estimated 1 to 12 specimens. Pitted die varieties are particularly prized by collectors who study die surface conditions because they preserve physical evidence of environmental exposure during die storage or handling. The 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar was struck in substantial quantities, yet this particular die's advanced deterioration makes surviving examples genuinely scarce.
