Description

Terminal die failure takes dramatic form in VAM-1AF of the 1924 Peace Dollar, where a horizontal die crack through the upper part of the eagle's right leg widens to a displaced break above the D in DOLLAR. Discovered by Randy Burgess in July 2006, this reverse variety documents the progression from crack to break in a concentrated area where the die was under sustained stress. The eagle's legs and adjacent lettering on Peace Dollar reverses represent a high-relief zone where metal flow during striking places significant demands on the die surface. A displaced break, where the cracked section shifts outward, produces a raised area on struck coins often visible without magnification, making this variety more accessible to detection than many subtle doubled dies. Cataloged as plate 1AF II 1 B2a I-2 R-6, the R-6 rarity rating places the estimated known population at 13 to 30 specimens, establishing this as very scarce.
