Description
George Powell identified the 1924-P VAM-1AC in April 2006. Classified as II 1 - B2a (Long Spike Eagle's Shoulder), it is rated I-2 R-5. The variety's defining characteristic is a heavy die clash that manifests as a long vertical raised spike extending upward from the eagle's right shoulder on the reverse. This spike corresponds to the back of Liberty's neck from the obverse die, transferred during a clashing event, and reaches upward into the field between the letters U and N of UNUM. Die clashes on Peace dollars frequently produce dramatic raised lines because the high-relief design creates deep recesses in the dies that can capture and transfer substantial amounts of opposing design detail. The length and prominence of this particular clash spike make it one of the more visually striking examples among 1924-P die marriages.
