Description
Designated a Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM — one of the most collected and significant varieties in the entire Peace Dollar series — VAM-1A1 on the 1924 Philadelphia Mint issue was discovered by Bill Fivaz in January 1974. Fivaz, co-author of the Cherry Pickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties, identified the diagnostic "Bar D": a vertical bar of raised metal extending from the left side of the D in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST downward to the rim. The plate designation II 1 - B2a classifies this as Obverse Die Class II (normal die), die pair 1, with Reverse Die Class B2a. Rated I-2 (significant) and R-4 (estimated 400 to 1,000 known). The Bar D is one of the most visually dramatic Peace Dollar diagnostics because the raised metal bar is visible without magnification on well-preserved examples, making it a prime cherry-picking target at dealer inventories and shows. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design was struck from 1921 through 1935. Philadelphia Mint production.
