Description

Discovered in 2011 by Mark Kimpton, this 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar is classified as VAM-1BB under the designation II1 - B2a (E on Reverse), carrying a rarity rating of I-4 R-6, which indicates an estimated population of 1 to 12 known examples. The variety is a clashed die, where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, leaving incuse impressions of each die's design transferred onto the other. Specifically, a partial incuse letter E from the WE of the obverse appears on the reverse, positioned atop die clash marks across the second ray from the top of the eagle's left wing. This clash E sits further to the left than the similar feature found on VAM-1D, making comparison between the two varieties an effective attribution method. Die clashes occur when a planchet fails to feed between the dies during the striking cycle, and the resulting transferred design elements become permanent markers on the affected dies. The 1924 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had a mintage of approximately 11.81 million, yet the R-6 rarity confirms that this specific clashed die state is exceptionally scarce among surviving specimens.
