Description

VAM-1AX in the 1921-P Morgan Dollar series (IV 1 D1a: Die Gouge Upper Tail Feathers) is identified on the reverse by a slanted die gouge at the left side of the upper tail feathers, a heavy single vertical polishing line at the left side of the top berries of the left wreath, and the absence of scribbles at the eagle's left leg — that last point distinguishing this die from related varieties. On the obverse, a couple of lightly doubled left stars and E are present. The reverse D1a die carries all three markers collectively. An important note for 1921 Morgan Dollars: all dates were entered as part of the master die rather than being individually punched into working dies, meaning no variation in date position exists across any 1921-P Morgan Dollar die pair. Discovered in 2010, VAM-1AX is documented within the final-year Morgan Dollar series. The 1921-P Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint under George T. Morgan's design. The combination of the slanted die gouge on the upper tail feathers and the vertical polishing line at the left wreath berries — along with the absence of the leg scribbles — provides a reliable three-point attribution framework.
