1921-P VAM-10

Description

Credited to Leroy Van Allen himself with a discovery date of November 1979 and revised in November 2011, VAM-10 of the 1921-P Morgan Dollar presents doubled date digits and stars alongside the distinctive scribbling die scratches characteristic of many 1921 reverse dies. Classified as 10 IV 6 · D2a, the obverse shows outlines of all four date digits doubled toward the rim, with all right and left stars carrying visible doubling. A couple of short diagonal polishing lines at the right end of the Phrygian cap ribbon serve as the obverse die marker. The reverse features fine die scratches running in various directions across over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg, between the eagle's left wing and body, and in the middle of both wings. Since 1921 Morgan Dollar production used master dies with dates already incorporated, the doubling observed on date digits reflects working hub or die doubling rather than individual date punch misalignment.
