Description

Designated Scribbling Die Scratches and classified as 1AF IV1 D1a, this 1921-P Morgan Dollar displays fine die scratches in various directions on the over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg and in the middle of both wings. The D1a reverse classification and die pair number 189 place this within the framework used for all 1921 Morgan Dollar varieties. The scribbling die scratch phenomenon on 1921 Morgan Dollars results from the intensive die polishing that characterized the hurried 1921 resumption of production. After no Morgan Dollars had been struck since 1904, the Mint was directed to resume coinage from the remaining bullion reserves, and the freshly prepared dies received aggressive polishing that left random multidirectional scratch evidence across the eagle's feather detail. The Philadelphia Mint produced the largest share of 1921 Morgan Dollars, generating numerous die pairs — and the sub-variety letter AF indicates this is deep in the alphabetical sequence of scribbling die scratch varieties cataloged for this date-mint combination.
