Description

RogerRock discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar in 2020. Cataloged as VAM-1AC3 under classification IV 1 with a D1a reverse, the variety is titled Displaced Field Break at E-P, A, R, and Obv Stars, Die File Lines in STATES, with a rarity rating of 189. The obverse documents progressive die failure through a die crack at the right stars and UNUM, accompanied by displaced field breaks at the third through sixth stars and UM, where metal has been pushed outward from the crack lines. The reverse shows die cracks at the top of STATE extending up to the denticles above A, with a slight displaced field break above the A. Die file lines appear in STATES on the reverse. Since 1921 dates were part of the master die, no positional variation exists across the issue. Collectors should note that VAM-1AC2 and VAM-1AC3 have what the VAM community describes as an evil mimic in 1921-P VAM-1B2, requiring careful comparison of the displaced field break locations to avoid misattribution. Morgan dollar production resumed in 1921 after a seventeen-year hiatus, and Philadelphia's massive output generated numerous die crack and break varieties.
