Description

Featuring a displaced field break rather than the die file lines suggested by some catalog titles, this 1921 Philadelphia Mint VAM-1AC1 Morgan Dollar is classified as IV1 - D1a, specifically a "Displaced Field Break E-P." Discovered on November 8, 2007 by Raymond Roberts and revised in 2018, the reverse exhibits a die crack running from rim to rim above the letters E and P, with a slightly tilted field in the displaced break area between those letters. On the obverse, the left and right stars are very slightly doubled and tripled, adding a secondary point of interest. The displaced field break is a late-die-state phenomenon where a crack bisects the die face and one side shifts slightly relative to the other, creating a visible step or displacement in the coin's field. As a 1921 issue, the date was part of the master die, producing no variation in date position — a characteristic of the resumption year when the Philadelphia Mint struck Morgan Dollars for the first time since 1904 under the Pittman Act mandate. Composed of 90% silver, the 1921 Morgan represents the final year of George T. Morgan's iconic dollar design.
