1913 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-05-1913-101 (014.8) and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI, this is the primary doubled die obverse for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type 2 (recessed ground) variety. Strong extra thickness is visible on LIBERTY, the date, the top of the head, the nostril, and the feathers — a broad spread affecting multiple design elements across the obverse of James Earle Fraser's iconic design. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1913 5-cent WDDO-001, with photographs taken by Kevin Flynn. Three die stages are documented: Stage A shows no significant markers; Stage B displays a strong die clash from EPU visible under the chin; and Stage C reveals the Stage B die clash marks further deteriorated. The FS (Fivaz-Stanton) listing confirms this as a significant variety recognized in mainstream reference guides. Struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, the 1913 Type 2 Buffalo Nickel features the recessed ground beneath the bison that replaced the raised-mound Type 1 design during the same year. As WDDO-001 with a Cherrypickers listing, this variety commands strong collector interest.
