1913 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Second Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type II, WDDR-002 exhibits a spread towards the center on FIVE CENTS, USA, and the dots flanking the denomination. The centripetal doubling resulted from a secondary hub impression that shifted inward during die preparation. Additional die markers include a die clash under the chin and through E PLURIBUS UNUM on the obverse, indicating the dies also struck each other without an intervening planchet. Photography credits belong to Kevin Flynn, whose documentation has been instrumental in cataloging Buffalo Nickel varieties. James Earle Fraser designed the Buffalo Nickel in 1913, featuring a composite Native American portrait on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse. The Type II reverse, with its recessed denomination on a flat plane below the bison, replaced the raised-mound Type I during 1913 after the original proved susceptible to rapid wear. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 21.2mm. Examine FIVE CENTS, USA, and the flanking dots for the centripetal spread.
