1911-D Over Mint Mark WOMM-001

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team with Variety ID 1911-D 1c WOMM-001, this over mintmark variety on the 1911-D Lincoln Wheat cent displays an apparent bottom of an S mintmark visible below the D, suggesting the die may have originally been prepared with an S mintmark for the San Francisco Mint before being corrected with a D for Denver. This variety is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #5 and Coppercoins 1911D-1OM-001. Three obverse die states have been documented: Stage A shows a strong secondary curve of the S to the south; Stage B displays a weaker secondary S curve; Stage C shows the weakest secondary S below the D, reflecting progressive die polishing that gradually reduced the visibility of the underlying S. Reverse die markers also progress across states: Stage A has a light die scratch N to S between the dot and P; Stage B shows a heavy die crack running ENE from the rim at 8 o'clock; Stage C has the Stage A die scratch abraded away. The 1911-D cent was struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc, weighing 3.11 grams at 19 mm diameter. Denver produced 12,672,000 cents in 1911, a relatively modest mintage. Over mintmark varieties from this early period of the Lincoln cent series are scarce and historically significant, as they provide tangible evidence of the die distribution and mintmark application practices employed by the Philadelphia Mint when preparing dies for branch mints.
