Description
This 1911 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a major rim cud on the reverse spanning from approximately 3:30 to 6:30 on the clock dial — a substantial arc covering roughly one-quarter of the reverse periphery. A cud error occurs when a section of the die rim fractures and breaks away entirely, creating a void in the die surface into which metal flows freely during striking, producing a raised, featureless blob at the coin's edge. The scale of this cud, obliterating a significant portion of the lower-right reverse design, places it among the more dramatic die failures documented on early Lincoln Wheat Cents. The 1911-D cent was struck in the traditional bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19 mm. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Ears reverse, paired with his Lincoln portrait since the cent's debut in 1909, features delicate wheat stalks flanking ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — detail that would have been completely consumed by the cud in the affected area. Denver Mint production of cents was still relatively new in 1911, having begun only in 1911 itself for the Lincoln series at the D mint, making any die variety from this date-mintmark combination notable for the series.
