Description

DDO-001 on the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent — VDB marks the first year of the Lincoln cent with a strong spread West-Northwest on BERTY of LIBERTY, 190 of the date, and the lips — designated as Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. Cross-reference: FS-1101. Die markers: UVC-1210 and DMR-005. Stage A places both the obverse and reverse in early die state. The reverse for both die marriages is RDV-001, carrying the V.D.B. initials of designer Victor David Brenner. I-code markers: I-2, extra Lincoln on the right side of the bust; I-2, lips are doubled. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDO-001. The 1909 Lincoln cent is the very first year of the series, issued to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth. The V.D.B. initials on the reverse were removed after only 484,000 Philadelphia examples were struck, making the 1909-P VDB one of the most iconic coins in American numismatics. A doubled die obverse on this first-year, VDB-reverse issue — with an FS-1101 Fivaz-Stanton listing — carries exceptional collector appeal across both the error variety and key date communities.
