This inaugural-year 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a die clash on the obverse where part of the reverse N from ONE CENT transferred between Lincoln's chin and bowtie. Die clashes on Lincoln Wheat Cents follow a consistent geometric pattern due to the fixed spatial relationship between the obverse portrait and reverse inscriptions: when the dies strike each other without an intervening planchet, specific reverse letters consistently transfer to predictable obverse locations, and the N from CENT routinely appears in the chin-to-bowtie zone because of where that letter sits relative to the portrait on the opposing die. The 1909 VDB holds paramount historical significance as both the first year of the Lincoln Cent — the first circulating U.S. coin to depict a real historical person — and as the variety bearing Victor David Brenner's full VDB initials on the reverse, which were removed partway through production after public criticism of their prominent placement. The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper composition weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Brenner designed the obverse Lincoln portrait to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth, while the wheat ears reverse featured his initials between the lower wheat stalks. The die clash on this first-year issue adds a production anomaly dimension to an already historically significant coin, documenting that even in the debut year of what would become the longest-running coin design in U.S. history, the normal mechanical realities of high-speed coinage — including occasional die-to-die contact without a planchet — were part of the production landscape from the very beginning.
