1901-O VAM-35

Description

Discovered by Glenn Wygan in September 2002, this 1901 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is classified as VAM-35 with the designation III2 14 - C4f, describing a slanted far date with doubled reverse legend. The obverse die, classified III2 14, shows the date slanted and further right than normal, with the second 1 higher than the first 1 — a positional anomaly providing an immediate visual diagnostic. The reverse die, classified C4f, exhibits slightly doubled legend letters at top and bottom inside toward the rim. The C4 reverse classification with the f sub-designation places this among the more complex reverse die types in the 1901-O series. Glenn Wygan's discovery added to the growing catalog of 1901-O varieties during an active period of VAM research on New Orleans Morgan Dollars. The slanted far date combined with doubled reverse legend creates a dual-feature variety where both sides carry distinctive diagnostics. The 1901-O is among the scarcer New Orleans dates, and the combination of obverse date positioning with reverse doubling makes VAM-35 a variety offering clear attribution points on both sides of the coin.
