1901-O VAM-13

Description

Discovered by Jim Baxter in February 1979, the 1901-O VAM-13 is catalogued as 13 (revised) III2 6 - C4/C3b (Slanted Date, 2 Olive Reverse) — a multi-feature Morgan Dollar variety from the New Orleans Mint. The obverse III2 6 carries a slanted date, in which the numerals appear at an angle relative to the base, a die-positioning characteristic from hub-to-die transfer. The reverse die C4/C3b is particularly rich: a faint shallow extra olive appears to the right of the olive connected to the branch; doubling shows on the right of the eagle's nostril, eye, point of beak, and two feathers adjacent to the right leg; further doubling appears on the upper part of the left wing and the back of the lower arrowhead. The mintmark is a III O style, set high with a tilt to the left and a small horizontal bar at the bottom opening. Together, the slanted date, multiple areas of reverse doubling, and the characterized mintmark style make VAM-13 one of the more complex and interesting 1901-O attributions. New Orleans Morgans were struck in 90% silver, and the 1901-O is a popular New Orleans date among Morgan Dollar collectors.
