1901-O VAM-25

Description

Credited to Martin Field from his June 1981 discovery and revised in August 2008, the 1901-O VAM-25 documents a Slanted Date with polishing lines in the wing feather bands. Classified with die pairing III2 6 and reverse C3a, the obverse shows a slanted date where the digits tilt from standard alignment. The reverse exhibits diagonal polishing lines in a small band at the inner and outer feather junction in the middle of both wings — evidence of die polishing during its working life, likely to remove clash marks. The emission sequence is number 181. The 2008 revision, twenty-seven years after Field's initial identification, reflects the VAM community's ongoing refinement as new specimens surface. Polishing lines in the wing feather bands are useful die markers because the intricate feather detail provides a complex background against which linear marks stand out under magnification.
