1901-O VAM-23

Description

Attributed by Martin Field in September 1979, this 1901-O Morgan Dollar variety carries classification III2 1 C4/C3i and is distinguished by the 2 Olives Reverse — the hub characteristic introduced in a subset of Morgan Dollar reverse dies that adds a secondary shallow olive to the right of the primary olive connected to the branch. On this reverse, hub doubling is visible at the base of the left and lower olive leaf cluster, along the top of the upper arrow feather, at the back of the lower arrowhead, across the upper middle feathers of the left wing, and on the right side of the eagle's nostril and eye — a comprehensive spread confirming the hub type. The O mintmark is upright with a slight shift to the right. On the obverse, vertical polishing lines run through Liberty's nose and mouth, serving as the primary die marker. The 1901-O Morgan Dollar was produced in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint.
