1901-O VAM-29A

Description

Identified by VAMWorld expert Larry Briggs in July 2004, VAM-29A on the 1901-O Morgan Dollar combines three distinct features: a far date positioned further right than normal, a high O mint mark set above the standard position, and "worm wing gouges" — raised, worm-like vee-shaped lines on the eagle's right wing, produced by gouges in the reverse die that transferred as raised features onto struck coins. These worm-like formations give the variety a distinctive visual signature under magnification. Plated as 29A III25 with Reverse C3c on page 184, the designation places this within Obverse Die Class III25, paired with the C3c reverse die classification. The "A" suffix indicates a later die state branching from the parent VAM-29. New Orleans struck 13.32 million Morgan Dollars in 1901, and the convergence of a far date, high mint mark, and distinctive reverse gouging makes VAM-29A a triple-feature variety that stands out within the 1901-O die census.
