1900-P VAM-28

Description

Marc Serafine's June 2001 discovery, the 1900 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-28 is classified as 28 III222 C3a (Doubled Ear, Near Date) with die pair 187 and DPIS B23LE. Struck in 90% silver, the obverse shows a slightly doubled right inside of the ear, where a secondary hub impression displaced the inner ear contour, and the date sits further left than normal. Die stage progression documents that early to mid die state specimens show no reverse cracks, and the ear doubling does not appear on earlier die states, emerging only as wear exposes the underlying secondary impression through metal flow. This progressive appearance means specimens from the earliest production runs may lack the ear diagnostic entirely, requiring later die state examples for full confirmation. The DPIS B23LE designation documents the die pair's position within the broader emission sequence.
