Error
Description
Bill Deterline discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar variety in December 1977, classifying it as 12 III2 10 with a C3a reverse under the designation Very Near Doubled Date. The obverse die positions the date much further left than normal, and all four digits are strongly doubled on top. The leftward date shift combined with heavy top-of-digit doubling makes this one of the more visually accessible doubled date VAMs in the 1900-P series. Research notes add a cautionary layer: multiple examined examples attributed to VAM-12 proved upon closer inspection to be VAM-5B specimens exhibiting strike doubling on the date, complicating field identification.
