Error
Description
Discovered by Jeff Oxman in May 1985, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-23 (revised) under Classification III2 18, C3a, with die pair 188, documenting a Near Low Date with Doubled Stars. On the obverse, the first two stars on both the left and right sides are doubled towards the rim, and the ear is slightly doubled at the right inside. The date is set low and further left than normal. DPIS is B23RE. Collectors should beware of strike doubling on this coin, which can mask the actual hub doubling on the stars. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1900 Morgan Dollar was produced in large quantities during the final years before the series paused in 1904. Jeff Oxman's 1985 discovery identified the doubled stars and near low date position as primary diagnostics. The strike doubling warning is significant because mechanical doubling from loose die fit can superficially resemble genuine hub doubling, making careful examination essential for accurate attribution of VAM-23.
