Description

Martin Field discovered this variety in April 1982. Cataloged as VAM-22, classified III2 17, C3a ((Very?) Near Date, Doubled 19) (187), the obverse shows the date set further left than normal. The 1 is doubled at the bottom right, while the 9 displays doubling at the lower left of the upper loop and at the bottom of the lower loop. Die Pair In Sequence value is RE2. The "(Very?)" qualifier in the official designation reflects ongoing debate about whether this date position qualifies as simply near or very near, a distinction that matters for precise die variety classification. Date position on Morgan Dollars was determined by the placement of individual date logotypes punched into each working die, meaning every die could have a slightly different date location. The doubling on the 1 and 9 while the 00 digits remain unaffected suggests the hub doubling event primarily impacted the left portion of the date area. =1900-P VAM-22 (Very?)
