1900-P VAM-15

Description

Martin Field discovered this Philadelphia Morgan dollar in October 1978. Cataloged as VAM-15 under classification III2 13 with a C3a reverse, titled Slanted Date, carrying a rarity rating of 189, this variety stands out for its tilted date position. The date sits in a normal lateral position but is distinctly slanted, with the 1 noticeably closer to the rim than the remaining digits. The die pair index score is C3/RE4. In late die states, the inside of Liberty's ear may appear doubled from die fatigue as the metal flow pattern shifts under repeated striking pressure. Additionally, a late die state LFCP specimen has revealed gouges below the bottom of the hair on the obverse and below the LA on the reverse, accompanied by overall die deterioration. Collectors should note that 1900-P VAM-15 does not share either its obverse or reverse die with 1900-P VAM-15A, despite the sequential numbering that might suggest a die state relationship.
