Recorded in 2010, VAM-14B catalogs a Near Slanted Date with Die Gouge Below LL on the 1900-P Morgan Dollar. Plate designation: 14B III2 12 - C3a, plate (181). DPIS B23LE. The obverse displays a date set closer to the rim than standard and angled at a slight slant — characteristics produced by hand-positioning the date logotype during die preparation at Philadelphia. The reverse carries the variety's most distinctive diagnostic: a pointed die gouge at the end of a denticle below LL in DOLLAR, creating a raised mark extending from the denticle into the adjacent field. Die gouges of this type result from physical contact between a hard object and the die surface, leaving a permanent impression that transfers to every subsequent strike.
