Description

Bill Deterline's July 1978 discovery, revised in 2014 by Brickie, VAM-14.1 documents a Near Slanted Date on the 1900 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar under classification III2 12 - C3a (189). The obverse shows the date set further left than its normal lateral position, with the 1 positioned close to the rim — a date placement anomaly that occurred during the hand-punching of date digits into the working die. Philadelphia struck a massive 8,830,000 Morgan Dollars in 1900, the twenty-third year of production under the Bland-Allison Act and its successor legislation. The reverse is designated C3a without additional distinguishing characteristics noted. A critical attribution detail: VAM-14.1 shares exactly the same die pair as 1900-P VAM-45, meaning these two catalog entries represent duplicate attributions of a single die marriage. The ".1" suffix in VAM-14.1 indicates a revised or sub-variety classification that was assigned during the 2014 revision by Brickie, refining the original 1978 attribution to better position it within the evolving VAM catalog.
