1898-S VAM-7
Error
Description
Discovered by Jim Baxter in November 1978 and subsequently revised in November 2011 and July 2025, the 1898-S VAM-7 is classified as III2 13, C3f with an S/S Upright mint mark as its principal diagnostic. The obverse date sits at the right middle of normal lateral position with a slight slant, the 1 closer to the denticles than the 8. A single die polishing line at the top right in the Y of LIBERTY serves as the primary obverse die marker. On the reverse, the IV S mint mark is doubled to the right of the top serif and to the left of the lower serif, similar to the positioning seen on VAMs 4 and 17, and set slightly to the right. A horizontal polishing line at the right side of the upper tail feathers marks the reverse die. The die pair identification sequence is RH3/B45, and the emission sequence links this obverse with VAMs 20 and 7A. San Francisco Morgan Dollars from 1898 were struck in moderate quantity, and the S/S upright designation indicates a repunched mint mark where the secondary impression aligns vertically with the primary.
