Description

Martin Field discovered this variety in January 1985, and it was cataloged as the 1898-S VAM-12 Morgan Dollar with classification 12 III2 8 - C3h from die pair 186. The obverse presents a near date placement shifted further left than normal, with the second 8 showing doubling at the top inside of its lower loop. On the reverse, die C3h carries a mintmark set noticeably high and doubled, with displacement visible to the right of the top serif and the left side of the bottom serif. This regular strike San Francisco issue thus offers both date and mintmark doubling — two independent attribution points from different stages of die preparation. The near date position combined with the doubled second 8 provides the primary obverse diagnostics, while the high and doubled S mintmark on the reverse confirms the die marriage. San Francisco Morgan dollars of this era command collector attention, and documented VAM varieties with mintmark repunching add a layer of numismatic study. =1898-S VAM-12 Near Date, Doubled Second 8, S/S High= Discovered by Martin Field, January 1985.
